การต่อสู้เพื่อสิทธิของชาวรักร่วมเพศของมิล์คได้พลิกโฉมหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ครั้งสำคัญของอเมริกา เป็นต้นกล้าสำคัญในการต่อสู้จนนำมาสู่การเป็นที่ยอมรับ และการกล้าเปิดเผยตัวเองมากขึ้นในปัจจุบัน ที่กระจายไปทั่วโลก จนนิตยสารไทม์ยกให้เขาเป็นหนึ่งในร้อยบุคคลสำคัญของโลกแห่งศตวรรษ แต่หลังจากดำรงตำแหน่งทางการเมืองมาระยะหนึ่ง มิล์ดได้มีเรื่องบาดหมางกับ แดน ไวท์ คู่แข่งทางการเมืองที่เกลียดเกย์ ทำให้มิล์คถูกไวท์ยิงในระยะเผาขน พร้อมกับนายกเทศมนตรีซานฟรานซิสโก ในปี 1978
 

 
 

หลังจากไวท์ถฏนำตัวขึ้นศาล ไวท์สามารถรอดพ้นโทษฆ่าคนตายโดยเจตนาและไตร่ตรองไว้ก่อน ได้ด้วยข้อแก้ต่างว่าวิกลจริตชั่วขณะ อันเนื่องมาจากความซึมเศร้า ทำให้โทษเหลือเพียงฆ่าคนตายโดยไม่เจตนา และให้ไวท์จำคุก 7 ปี จิตแพทย์ที่ให้การบอกว่า ไวท์มีอาการซึมเศร้าหนักเนื่องจากชอบกินโค้กและขนมทวิงกี้ จนเกิดความไม่พอใจแก่ชุมชนชาวเกย์ในซานฟรานฯ และนำไปสู่การจราจลครั้งใหญ่ที่เรียกว่า White Night Riots เมื่อพ้นโทษออกมา ไวท์ต้องย้ายเมืองหนีและตัดสินใจฆ่าตัวตายด้วยก๊าซคาร์บอนไดอ๊อกไซด์ในโรงรถปี 1985

 


เบื้องหลังงานสร้าง

เขาคือนักเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อสิทธิเกย์ คือเพื่อน คือคนรัก คือศูนย์รวมจิตใจ เขาเป็นนักการเมือง เป็นนักสู้ เป็นบุคคลผู้ควรค่าแก่การยกย่อง เป็นแรงบันดาลใจ และเป็นวีรบุรุษ เรื่องราวของเขาพลิกโฉมหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ ความหาญกล้าของเขาเปลี่ยนแปลงชีวิตของผู้คนมากมาย

ในปี 1977 ฮาร์วีย์ มิลค์ ได้รับเลือกให้เข้าไปนั่งในสภาที่ปรึกษาแห่งซานฟรานซิสโก เขาคือเกย์เปิดเผยคนแรกที่มีสิทธิ์มีเสียงในองค์กรทางเมืองของสหรัฐอเมริกา ชัยชนะของมิลค์ไม่ใช่เพียงเพื่อสิทธิของกลุ่มรักร่วมเพศเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังเป็นการกำจัดความเหลื่อมล้ำทางการเมืองอีกด้วย นอกจากนี้ ฮาร์วีย์ มิลค์ ยังเปลี่ยนความหมายของการเป็นนักสู้เพื่อสิทธิมนุษยชน และกลายเป็นวีรบุรุษของชาวอเมริกันทุกชนชั้นตั้งแต่ราษฎรอาวุโสไปจนถึงกลุ่มผู้ใช้แรงงาน กระทั่งเขาเสียชีวิตก่อนวัยอันควรในปี 1978

ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Milk ถ่ายทอดช่วงชีวิต 8 ปีสุดท้ายของ ฮาร์วีย์ มิลค์ เริ่มตั้งแต่ตอนที่มิลค์ในวัย 40 ปีอาศัยอยู่ในนิวยอร์ก จนกระทั่งตัดสินใจออกตามหาจุดมุ่งหมายอื่นๆ ในชีวิต โดยย้ายมาลงหลักปักฐานกับคนรักคือ สกอตต์ สมิธ (รับบทโดย เจมส์ ฟรังโก้) ในซานฟราซิสโก และเปิดธุรกิจเล็กๆ ชื่อ Castro Camera ณ ใจกลางชุมชนของชนชั้นกรรมาชีพ ซึ่งต่อมากลายเป็นสถานที่พักพิงทางใจของกลุ่มรักร่วมเพศจากทั่วประเทศ ชุมชนคาสโตรอันเป็นที่รักบวกกับทัศนียภาพอันงดงามของเมืองเพิ่มพลังชีวิตให้กับมิลค์เป็นอย่างมาก จนถึงขั้นสร้างความประหลาดใจให้กับสกอตต์และตัวของเขาเองด้วยการเป็นกระบอกเสียงเรียกร้องความเปลี่ยนแปลง เขาเรียกร้องความเท่าเทียมทางสิทธิและโอกาสให้กับทุกๆ คน ความรักอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่มีต่อเมืองและผู้คนในเมืองนี้ทำให้เขาต้องสลับบทบาทไปมาเป็นเด็กบ้าง เป็นคนแก่บ้าง เป็นชายแท้บ้าง และเป็นชายรักร่วมเพศบ้าง ท่ามกลางอคติและกระแสต่อต้านกลุ่มรักร่วมเพศซึ่งเปรียบประหนึ่งบรรทัดฐานของสังคมในเวลานั้น
 

 

 

ด้วยแรงหนุนเต็มกำลังจากสกอตต์ บรรดาเพื่อนใหม่ และเหล่าอาสาสมัคร มิลค์จึงกระโจนเข้าสู่กระแสการเมืองอันเชี่ยวกราก รวมทั้งคอยดูแลช่วยเหลือหนุ่มนักเคลื่อนไหวไฟแรงอย่าง คลีฟ โจนส์ (เอมิล เฮิร์สช์) ไปพร้อมๆ กัน เขาใช้อารมณ์ขันมัดใจสาธารณชน และลงมือทำจริงจังมากกว่าดีแต่พูด ไม่นานนักก็กลายเป็นที่รู้จักไปทั่ว แต่กระนั้น มิลค์ก็ยังยืนกรานจะเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการเมืองส่วนท้องถิ่นให้ได้ อันเป็นเหตุให้เขาและสกอตต์ต้องแยกทางกันไป ผ่านมาถึงช่วงที่เขาลงสมัครรับเลือกตั้งเป็นครั้งที่ 4 จึงได้พบรักใหม่กับ แจ็ค ลิร่า (ดิเอโก ลูนา)

Using flashbacks from a statement recorded late in life and archival footage for atmosphere, this film traces Harvey Milk''s career from his 40th birthday to his death. He leaves the closet and New York, opens a camera shop that becomes the salon for San Francisco''s growing gay community, and organizes gays'' purchasing power to build political alliances. He runs for office with lover Scott Smith as his campaign manager. Victory finally comes on the same day Dan White wins in the city''s conservative district. The rest of the film sketches Milk''s relationship with White and the 1978 fight against a statewide initiative to bar gays and their supporters from public school jobs.
